What is the Young Curators Steering Group?

It’s a paid opportunity for six young people aged 18-30 in Balsall Heath to form a Steering Group. As part of the Steering Group, you will have the chance to discover new and/or respond to already collected stories related to the Baths and Balsall Heath. With support from a mix of our staff team and experts from our wider network you will be provided with the skills, resources and agency to decide how you want to explore each story with your chosen audiences and communities.

Our aim is to ensure that young people are represented and feel ownership of Moseley Road Baths’ and their own future by exploring the past and present.

This is a 6-month commitment in which participants will be paid £1200 for 6 days of work (approx 1 day per month). The group will decide when they work, including when they have skill-based sessions.

Why should I apply?

There are many reasons this opportunity may benefit you, whether you want to meet other local young people or get started with your career. I’ve highlighted a few reasons below:

  1. This is a development opportunity open to anyone who is curious about Moseley Road Bath’s journey – even if this is the first time you’ve heard about our work!
  2. We will offer tailored support and expert skill based sessions – which will be informed by what you want to explore.
  3. We will offer opportunities to expand your network on both a local, national and international scale!
  4. If invited onto the Steering Group you will gain skills in:

    – Teamwork
    – Communication
    – Creative thinking
    – Creative Problem solving
    – Project management
    – Commissioning
    – And much more!

  5. We will offer support in working as a freelancer e.g. helping you set up your HMRC account and with starting your self assessments.

  6. At the core of this project is the context of now. Unlike projects that ask young people to figure out what the future will look like, this programme is directly addressing the lack of opportunities for young people to explore what they and their peers want, need and believe is relevant to them here and now.

How to apply

Fill in the application form or send in a video answering the questions on the application form (no longer than 5 minutes) and send it to youngdigitalcurators@moseleyroadsbaths.org.uk

In the application, don’t worry about spelling and grammar! We are looking out for your voice and ideas.

Application deadline is 15th of May, 12pm (noon).

We want to ensure this project is as accessible and inclusive as possible, including the application process and working culture for project collaborators. We actively encourage and welcome access documents (access riders).

Budget is available to support the Steering Groups and participants’ access needs, and we will do whatever possible to ensure accessibility. We also recognise that we are a fairly new charitable organisation and currently have a heritage building that is about to undergo the process of restoration and refurbishment which does place some limitations on us, and therefore we recognise this position might not be suitable for everyone. We aim to be upfront and clear about what adjustments we can and cannot make.

Hi, I’m Gaby, the Creative Producer on the Young Curators project. I am a freelance writer, producer and arts facilitator, and I am working with Moseley Road Baths to bring this opportunity to you. Keep listening to find out what the project is, who we are looking for, the terms and conditions, and the information on how to apply.

Young Curator’s Steering Group

This is a paid opportunity for 18–30-year-olds. The application deadline is the 15th of May, 12pm noon.

What is the Young Curators’ Steering Group?

The Purpose:

Moseley Road Baths is going through restoration and refurbishment. We want to put local young people at the center of this journey through storytelling and community planning.

The Vision:

Moseley Road Baths are offering a paid development opportunity for six young people aged 18-30 in Balsall Heath to form a Steering Group.

The Steering Group will be invited to identify stories related to the Baths, Balsall Heath and young people today. They will be supported by the Moseley Road Baths team to lead creative decisions and decide how those stories are told with their chosen audiences and communities in mind.

Moseley Road Baths encourage the Steering Group to creatively explore and interrogate Moseley Road Baths’ history and heritage. To do so, they will be given the resources, agency and expert support, to create a digital (and potentially a physical) project that encourages a re-imagining and re-telling of the Baths journey to now.

About You:

We want the Steering Group to be representative of Balsall Heath and the people who live here.

This project is about telling the stories that are relevant to the young people in Balsall Heath and exploring Moseley Road Baths’ heritage in relation to the here and now. Our aim is to ensure that young people are represented and feel ownership of Moseley Road Baths’ and their own future by exploring the past and present.

We want the direction of the project to be guided and steered by the young people of Balsall Heath.

Steering Group roles are open to anyone who believes in the project’s vision, wants to support the project to be the best it can possibly be, and meets the following criteria:

  • One: Lives within a 15-minute radius of Balsall Heath, this can be by bus, bike, walking.
  • Two: Are aged 18-30
  • Three: Have a desire to curate and tell the stories of Balsall Heath and Moseley Road Baths
  • Four: Have a good understanding and lived experience of Balsall Heath
  • Five: Want to work as part of a collaborative team
  • Six: Someone who is curious!

This role does not require any formal qualifications or employment experience. You do not need to be a professional artist, curator, or storyteller! Your enthusiasm, experiences, and perspectives are enough.

This project is part of the Diving In program, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Practical Information (Terms and Conditions):

This is a paid role, the fee for the work is guaranteed at £1200 per person, based on 6 working days at £200 per day.

Steering Group members will work the equivalent to one day per month over the 6-month project, between June and November 2023.

Meetings will be arranged to a mutually agreed schedule; some Steering Group tasks may require working independently, which can be done to suit you around your own schedule.

FAQ

A curator is a person who tells a story through a collection of images, objects, texts, videos, a mix of different mediums, or in any format or medium they think represents their chosen story best.

The word curator is traditionally associated with museums or art galleries. But many people outside of these spaces will use curating skills in their work. For example, someone might curate an independent shop in which they collect, commission or make items to display and sell. Someone will also use a curatorial approach to a website or blog.

A curator will decide on a theme, or story to narrate and find ways to best tell that story and help their audience engage.

Skills developed as a curator: Storytelling, Creative Thinking, Creative Problem Solving, Communication, Active Listening, Project Management, and Teamwork.

A Steering Group is a group of people who advise and lead decision making in helping an organisation reach certain goals. Members of steering groups use their experiences, skills and knowledge to inform a project and advocate for their communities.

In this case, young people ages 18-30 in Balsall Heath will help Moseley Road Baths:

  • Learn how to provide meaningful and sustained opportunities for young people
  • Explore what stories local young people are interested in telling and how they relate to the building and its journey.

This is a 6-month commitment in which participants will be paid £1200 for 6 days of work (approx 1 day per month). The group will decide when they work, including when they have skill-based sessions.

The dates are not set, and will be agreed around the Group’s availability.

That is up to the Steering Group.

At this moment there is no set final product. The Steering Group will decide what story they want to tell and how they tell it.

All we ask is that they respond, in some way, to the Moseley Road Baths building and journey.

No problem!

But if you would like to come to the building beforehand, why not check out our timetable of activities.

Whats On

None at all!

You’re are invited to apply as long as you are:

  • Local to Balsall Heath (within a 15 minute radius on bus, bike or foot)
  • Aged 18-30
  • Have a desire to curate and tell the stories of Balsall Heath and Moseley Road Baths
  • Eager to build a network in Birmingham
  • Are curious!

The Moseley Road Baths team are committed to making this project as accessible to you as possible. If you are successful, we will go through each of your individual access requirements (if you decide to disclose them), and make sure provisions are put into place to meet them.

There is an access budget in the project, which will be utilised wherever it is needed.

This is something that we acknowledge and as part of the restoration have a plan to make it more accessible – this includes widening doorways, ensuring there are appropriate changing spaces, and ramp access, and lifts. However, if you do have a physical access barrier, do not let this deter you from applying. We will search for local and physically accessible space that can meet the needs of the Steering Group sessions.

There are loads of reasons this opportunity may benefit you, whether you want to meet other local young people or get started with your career. I’ve highlighted a few reasons below:

  1. This is a development opportunity open to anyone who is curious about Moseley Road Bath’s journey – even if this is the first time you’ve heard about our work!
  2. We will offer tailored support and expert skill based sessions – which will be informed by what you want to explore

  3. We will offer opportunities to expand your network on both a local, national and international scale!
  4. If invited onto the Steering Group you will gain skills in:
  • Teamwork
  • Communication
  • Creative thinking
  • Creative Problem solving
  • Project management
  • Commissioning
  • And much more!

We will offer support in working as a freelancer e.g. helping you set up your HMRC account and with starting your self assessments.

At the core of this project is the context of now. Unlike projects that ask young people to figure out what the future will look like, this programme is directly addressing the lack of opportunities for young people to explore what they and their peers want, need and believe is relevant to them here and now.
